Introduction to the matter of Drellin's Ferry and the monsters of The Witchwood.
Troubles with goblinoid tribbles
Heroes were stopped by town guard on their way to Drellin's Ferry. After describing the marauder attack by the road, a runner was sent to ask about what to do with the prisoners. The group was escorted to Old Toll House, which served as the town hall, courtroom, jail and Town Guard headquarters. There you met Captain Soranna Anitah, who asked you to come to see the Speaker.
"Our town is under attack", Town Speaker Norro Wiston tells you. "Hobgoblin raiders have been harrying our lands for several days now."
"We've had some troubles with hobgoblins before, but this is different", captain Soranna continues. "It looks like a large, aggressive tribe has moved down out of the Wyrmsmoke Mountains."
"Can you help us", Wiston asks.
Rumours of a haunted castle
In The Old Brindge Inn the halfling master Kellin Shadowbanks verifies everything the head of the town has told you. "And I tell you, that so-called castle of yours, it has been laying in ruins for decades. I'm sure it is both haunted and occupied by the hobgoblins."
That was verified by the hobgoblin prisoners, who were forced to speak through magic:
- "You may have won today, stupid humans, but our day is coming! The Red Hand will destroy all!"
- the warband's base is in Vraath Keep
- they serve Wyrmlord Koth, a mighty sorcerer who commands a manticore
- his chief lieutenant is Karkilan, "a bull-faced killer as big as an ogre"
- more warbands are reaving the lands around "the human river-town" to prepare for the "Day of Ruin"
Jorr the ranger joined the force as a guide. "Oh it will be that dangerous? My salary will be 10 gp per day, then. But I really hate those rotten troublemakers, lets go!" Jorr verifies the rumours about Vraath Keep, except that he can't be sure if it is currently occupied. "Wouldn't surprise me if some of the goblinoids are holed up there. Just the sort of thing damn goblins would do."
On their way, a boggy area was infested with frogs, insects and a hydra. After a terrible firefight the hydra was killed and Onni found some skeletons of hobgoblins, with a treasure.
Developments
- Jorr will escort you to Vraath Keep through a path which stays out of sight regarding the watchtowers. You may plan for investigations or an assault from any direction, as the old castle is on a small rocky hillock, surrounded by jungle, from all sides.
