Bardic Inspiration

The Deathmasque

Dulcimer was partly rebuilt by their mentor after their rescue and has had some customisations, such as four slender fingers and a thumb on each hand that gives them a greater deal of dexterity in musicianship, communication through gesticulation, and sleight of hand. The most noticeable customisation, however, came from their severely damaged face being rebuilt into a pale androgynous humanoid mask that can appear both beautiful and corpse-like. This Deathmasque is magical, and despite appearing to be made of delicate porcelain, is as strong as the hardest metal. In good health and high spirits will appear almost luminescent, when mentally/physically fatigued or injured will become dull and stained and covered in a network of cracks. It cannot be removed from Dulcimers face, and is for all intents and purposes their own face. This is both a blessing and a curse as it makes it difficult for them to hide their mental and physical health from others. The mask may have a deeper enchantment that has not yet been discovered. When asked about this, Dulcimer seems distant and says they think their face is a likeness of someone the old gnome cared deeply about, but lost.

Background

After the war ended and the Warforged were freed they, like many others of their kind, wandered looking for a new life. Encountering an elderly gnome bard, Dulcimer was captivated by the stories he told and the folk songs he played. They spoke of ordinary people and their struggles over the centuries. Love and loss. Heroism and despair. The gnome gave Dulcimer his wandering hat, saying his wandering days were over and it needed a new wanderer. The old gnome died in his sleep that night. Dulcimer set off to collect stories and train as a bard. Aiming to collect the songs of the people and share them with the world.
